NISA - Neuromuscular Integration and Structural Alignment

NISA – Neuromuscular Integration and Structural Alignment NISA is a direct technique designed to affect the fascia, a system of broad, web-like sheets, which envelopes tissue found everywhere in the body.

In an ideal well-aligned body, the tissue is soft and pliable. However, life happens and poor posture, physical or emotional trauma and disease take their toll. The fascia contracts, the layers adhere and become congested.

A direct fascia technique, such as NISA, addresses these problems by separating and stretching. NISA uses a shallow angle of entry, some lotion for lubrication and a "spreading" of tissue. All three aspects of the technique reduce the pain normally associated with structural bodywork.

A NISA treatment involves taking a postural assessment of the client and then treating the restricted areas of the body by stretching and loosening the adhered connective tissue (fascia). Most clients feel relaxed and much less restricted by the end of treatment.

-paraphrased from NISA article by Margaret Colburne RMT and Linda Simpson RMT.
